I remember a friend of my sister's family visited Disney about five years back. I think they've got three children. I don't remember how much the total was that she said they spent but we were talking about how the amount could buy them a home here.

It’s absolutely mind-boggling. I haven’t been to Disney in many years (when it was considerably less expensive), and even then I found myself walking around thinking, What kind of work do all of these people do that would allow them to spend several days here with a family of 4+ people???

There is also the matter of how much pressure such an investment of time, money, and effort puts on a family to somehow have “the experience of a lifetime.” Sure, a theme park can be fun and interesting, but it’s also crowded and hot, with long lines, cranky tired children, at least a few rude adults, marginal food, and other unanticipated challenges. Bad weather, someone getting sick, or even a very negative encounter with someone at the park can eviscerate even the most carefully planned dream vacation in the blink of an eye.
